Scripture Union Daily Guide 2nd September 2025 Outline
“Moses’ seat” is a place of spiritual authority. We must subject ourselves to the authority of those God has placed over us to direct us: our pastors, Church and political leaders, etc. (See Romans 13:1-5). No pastor or leader will likely teach you to steal or commit adultery even if he himself is not free from these sinful actions. However, obeying our leaders does not mean copying their actions unless they are truly following Christ (see 1 Corinthians 11:1). Jesus gave three reasons in today’s passage why we must not copy the sinful actions of religious leaders. First, many of them say one thing and do another.
Phylacteries (Matthew 23:5) were small boxes, which contained Scripture verses, worn on the forehead and arm. Tassels were fringes on the outer garment. The Israelites were to wear them as reminders to obey God’s commands. See Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Numbers 15:37-40. The Scribes and Pharisees wear them for other reasons (Matthew 23:5-7), hence Christ’s second warning. See Matthew 23:13-15 for the third reason and let us take warning from the hard words Jesus used against them here.
And So
By the way you live, are you shutting the door of heaven to the very people you are seeking to win for Christ?

Closing Prayer
Pray for the leaders in your Church so that they can live in such a way that they can truly say with Apostle Paul, “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1).
